PART-TIME JOB AVAILABLE: Host/Counter/Takeout/Expo

Pay: $7.50 to $8.75 per hour depending on experience, with an opportunity to earn some takeout gratuities.

PART-TIME SHIFTS WE NEED NEW EMPLOYEE TO FILL: Friday 4:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 4:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday evening 4:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Monday evening 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This job entails taking carry out orders over the phone and in person, packaging takeout orders, and assisting wait staff with running their food when they are busy. You will also ring customers up and be responsible for adding order totals and calculating sales tax and discounts. Our menu is somewhat extensive so familiarity with Chinese cuisine is a plus — fast learners also a plus!

Prior hospitality/serving experience required preferred — and basic knowledge of food and beverage preparations, service standards, guest relations and etiquette is also a must.

Please have strong communication skills.

ABOUT RED MOON CHINESE CAFE AND WORKING WITH US:

Red Moon Chinese Cafe is an Eden Prairie mainstay – the Kwan family has been serving the community since 1996.

If you enjoy working alongside kind, down-to-earth co-workers and customers, Red Moon is likely the place for you. Red Moon is a family restaurant with a deep base of longtime, loyal customers.

Being a small, family-run restaurant – we count on team players who are willing to lend a hand where it’s needed. That may mean as a hostess/takeout helper, you’d be expected to help wait on a table or two to relieve a server who has worked a double. Servers will be expected to assist with takeout orders. Light dish work might need to get done – and anyone who has worked in an Asian restaurant knows peapods need to get peeled, too.

Mr. Kwan’s great cooking makes a good fringe benefit, too – either deeply discounted or free depending on the hours you work.

HOW TO APPLY: Email Ben Kwan about your interest in the job: ben@redmoonchinesecafe.com

AFTER WE GET IN TOUCH, WE MAY ASK YOU TO FILL OUT AN APPLICATION, or you may do it now and include it in your email to Ben Kwan:

Download our application in WORD or PDF

You can save a bundle by “Bringing Your Own Beverage” and we welcome you to do so in the hopes you’ll enjoy our excellent Chinese American cuisine even more.

Diners are permitted to carry in their own beer or wine (hard liquor is NOT permitted). We are allowed to offer this service because we have a strong beer and wine license from the City of Eden Prairie. We invite you to drink responsibly for a nominal per-bottle corkage fee or setup fee for beer drinkers. ($5 corkage per bottle, $2 setup fee per beer drinker).

As you may know, we also now offer a beer and wine menu of our own with daily happy hour from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

All MN state laws apply. You must be 21-years old or older to carry in and consume beer or wine at Red Moon. We reserve the right to prohibit any customer from drinking on our premises at any time for any reason.

It’s one of the top-read stories this week on the New York Times website, a “Well” blog entry touting the health benefits of eating brown rice. There’s further evidence now that eating brown rice can cut one’s risk of developing diabetes.

As a result of this health information and our own personal commitment to the health of ourselves (see below) and our customers, Red Moon is now offering brown rice as a substitution for white rice.

Brown rice is just like white rice, but with its healthy, outer parts still intact. Image courtesy of http://www.flickr.com/photos/rob-qld/ and used under a Creative Commons 2.0 license.

Brown rice is basically the same white rice you may be used to eating — only it still has its “healthy parts” intact. The brown rice is white rice’s unrefined cousin. It has its fibrous shell intact — helping with digestion and slowing the rise in glucose associated with white rice.

The fresh evidence comes by way of a new Harvard research study. The findings support the hypothesis that eating more whole grains helps stave off health threats like diabetes. In fact, among study participants, those who ate 5+ servings of white rice weekly are 20 percent more likely to develop diabetes. But those who ate 2+ servings of brown rice a week are 10 percent less likely to develop diabetes.

Now whether this is a correlation or causation is still up for debate. But the evidence suggests that eating more brown rice might be beneficial — especially if you eat a lot of white rice right now.

The timing on this study is really quite impeccable. A member of our family has just been told to cut back on white rice consumption — as he is a pre-diabetic. We’ll be eating more brown rice to see if that, along with some more exercise, helps lower the numbers associated with diabetes.

While we’re at it — feel free to give brown rice a try for yourself!

Hey everyone — just wanted to let you know that my dad says hello from China… and Happy Chinese New Year!

Tat Kwan was able to sneak away from Red Moon in February to experience Chinese New Year in China for the first time since he left his home country in 1972. It’s been a great experience so far. During his first trip to Beijing, dad was able to see the Great Wall and other sights like the Forbidden City.

Interestingly, he did some of his own cooking in China. While staying at Justin Kwan’s apartment in Beijing, Tat cooked some of his famous Shrimp in Lobster Sauce — as Justin had been missing his dad’s cooking a lot during his years living in China.

So local Red Moon fans… consider yourselves lucky. You get to eat the stuff whenever you want!

Just wanted to share this picture and give our thanks to the Eden Prairie Chamber Ambassadors who came to welcome us to the chamber last month. It was so nice meeting you all and getting such a warm welcome to the community of local entrepreneurs and business people.

Hopefully we’ll see many more chamber members as we become more involved in the programs and events in the months to come.

Thanks again!

We’ve been having a lot of fun back in our kitchen developing a few new dishes. We aren’t exactly sure when they will hit the menu, but we’d be more than happy to share them with you if you ask about them. Consider them “top secret” items that only you know about. Ask your server to ask Ben or Tat Kwan if this Panko and Coconut Crusted Sole atop Coconut-Curried Vegetables can be prepared for you.

We shared this dish with a good friend and longtime customer last Saturday. She had nothing but great things to say about the dish. So go ahead… if it looks good to you, ask if you can try it!

We’re also working on some chicken lettuce wraps, a Chinese chopped chicken salad and some other things as well.
